Darwen arrived
with their usual collection of old geezers and pre-pubescent hopefuls -
just like us really. One change was their new dynamic and mouthy captain
who rather undid Darwen's usual high standards of sportsmanship. We batted
first (yes, Sargey lost the toss again, so much for tossing practice) and
raced to 102 for 2 with useful contributions from Ingers, 31 and Jake, 41
when there was a sudden dramatic collapse to 129 all out. This figure was
achieved after careful editing, by the umpires, of the scorers' somewhat
fanciful account of the innings. Perhaps Thomas is thinking of a career
in tabloid journalism or maybe his female companion distracted him.
Parkey, stung into action by the aforementioned captain's comments and
laughable (but successful) LBW shout against him, provided the best response
by routing the batsmen, ably assisted as ever by Steve Harwood. Revenge
was sweet when Parkey had the captain caught, sending him on his way with
a fond farewell wave of an extended digit. 36 all out, early pints all
round.
