Match Report

The seconds
lurched into the new season with a mixture of the usual old farts plus some
younger (much younger) talent which brought the average age down to a healthy
35 or so. The skipper (Sargey again - no-one else was daft enough to volunteer)
got off to a good start by not losing the toss, thus equalling last season's
best sequence. Hoghton were promptly inserted and slowly struggled to 11
for 5. Some hefty biffing ensued taking them quickly to 70 without further
loss. Eventually a total of 93 was reached, Col Smith and Lee Fowler taking
the final wickets. The highlights were Martin Fowler's express delivery
which uprooted off stump about a second before the batsman played a very
correct-looking forward defensive, and the skipper going for 7 off a single
ball (thanks guys).
Our response was steady with the target achieved in relative comfort
with 20 overs to spare. The skipper's unbroken partnership with Martin
Fowler continued in the bar afterwards. When Martin retired Cookey took
over until the finish, Sargey being last man out. |
